From the Rich in Love press information kit (1993):
About the production, page 4:
"Despite the demand to be placed on the actor playing Warren, the filmmakers knew that the role of Lucille would be the most difficult to cast. 'We knew we needed a talented young actress, but one who could bring as much freshness to the role as a newcomer,' Richard Zanuck recounts.
Beresford concurs. 'We knew the role of Lucille posed a casting challenge, because she's so central to the story and the audience' understanding of the family. You have to believe in her vulnerability and, frankly, she's a very sentitive and touchy person. We had to find an actress who would have that awareness, but not drive everybody mad.'
Performing on stage in Chicago, young actress Kathryn Erbe heard about the film, but was unable to read for the part in person. Instead she sent a videotaped audition which was strong enough to lead Richard and Lili Zanuck to travel to Chicago to see her in the play. When it could finally be arranged, all the parties involved met in New York for a final audition and the role was Kathryn's."
About the cast, page 8/9:
"KATHRYN ERBE (Lucille Odom) tackles the pivotal role in 'RICH IN LOVE,' her third feature film, having already marked her young career with a Tony award nomination for her work on Broadway.
She made her feature film debut in 'Runaway Dreams' and was more recently seen in the hit comedy movie 'What About Bob?,' portraying Richard Dreyfuss' daughter.
Erbe garnered a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for 'The Speed of Darkness.' She also appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning production of 'The Grapes of Wrath.' Most recently, she starred in Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre production of 'My Thing of Love,' directed by Terry Kinney.
When not in front of the camera or on stage, Erbe continues to hone her skills. She has studied at the Lee Strasbern Institute, voice at the New York University Ensemble Workshop, and dance at the American Dance Theatre and Boston's Jean Page School of Dance."
